Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Chinese Medicine (CM) has a history of more than 2500 years and is the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the philosophy, theories, experiments and experiences indigenous to Chinese cultures and used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental illness.
TCM is a holistic and natural medical system from ancient to contemporary China, and now worldwide. It operates on philosophy and theories that self-healing process of nature in the human body will restore balance and harmony of body, mind and spirit. Thus, restoring self-healing ability is the core mechanism of TCM.
TCM also emphasizes on personalized treatment by following a principle of diagnosis and treatment, called Pattern Differentiation for Treatment or just Pattern Differentiation. Based on individual’s state of illness and health, lifestyle, living environment and season, patterns are diagnosed and treated with the six types of modalities such as acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese herbs, Tuina/massage, Qigong and dietary therapy. Therefore, pattern-based and person-centered treatment provides humane and scientific healthcare rather than disease-centered care.
Contemporarily, TCM is a form of integrative medicine and a part of complementary and alternative medicine. As a pioneer part, acupuncture started the legendary journey of TCM in the US since 1970’. Then acupuncture and Chinese medicine has gained more and more popularity and offered a valuable option for people who seek for health and wellness. In my practice, with my unique educational background in TCM and Western medicine, I have skillfully integrated TCM modalities into patient’s whole treatment plan including other healthcare professions such as Western medicine, nutrition and physical therapy.
